Guide to Electronic Mail

Electronic Mail (email) is the Internet equivalent of ordinary post or mail. Regular mail is now commonly referred to as snail-mail, as email message delivery is almost instantaneous. An email message will reach any part of the world in a matter of minutes. This has obvious advantages for the world of business. Many large businesses will have their own internal email system.

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) generally provide free electronic mailboxes to subscribers. Email messages are stored in this electronic mailbox until you connect to the Internet.

Using your email program or client (such as Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Eurora or Pegasus) you can check the mailbox for messages and collect any new messages waiting there. This differs greatly from sending a fax, as you must have a fax machine waiting at the other end of the telephone line before the document can go through.

Before sending email you must have the address of the recipient. If you have an Internet account you most likely have an email address. Many online services, such as Hotmail, Yahoo and Online.ie provide free email accounts.
