ICT Planning Matrix

The ICT planning matrix is designed to help schools establish their level of development in terms of ICT usage. It highlights a wide range of issues for consideration in the development of a school ICT plan.

Within the categories of the matrix, issues are discussed in terms of key criteria and these are 'graded' according to three stages of integration - initial, intermediate and advanced.

The matrix offers a clear means of assessing a school's current ICT status. Schools may find that they are primarily in the advanced stage in terms of their ICT resources and infrastructure but they are in the initial stages when it comes to ICT and the curriculum.. Having established that this is the case such a school should prioritise the integration of ICT throughout the curriculum.

The integration of ICT is not simply a linear process, with a clear beginning, middle and end. Every school needs to analyse their current position in terms of ICT integration and to develop a plan that will allow their school to progress to the next stage

It is recommended that each school works through the ICT planning matrix to identify their strengths and weaknesses in terms of the current use of ICT within the school. Having established their strengths, they should then prioritise their weaknesses under the five categories and devise a realistic plan to progress to the next level. Such a process should be monitored on a regular basis to ensure that progress is being made.
