ICT and Special Needs – Introduction to ICT and Visual Impairments

Pre-requisites

Introductory Course Phase 1 or equivalent experience
Ideally, participants will also have completed Introductory Course Phase 2 or have equivalent experience.
Target Audience

This course is intended specifically for teachers of students who have a visual impairment at both primary and post-primary levels.

Contents

This course content includes a brief overview of how ICT can be used to support students with visual impairments. Three case studies will be presented which focus on curriculum uses of ICT and illustrate how ICT can be used to give individual students access to different areas of learning. However, the course is not intended to provide detailed training in the operation of specific software packages for visual impairments.

Course objectives:

  • To raise awareness of the different ways in which ICT can be used across the curriculum as well as how it can provide access to the curriculum for students with a visual impairment
  • To instil confidence in teachers to explore its use in the classroom
  • To stimulate interest in learning more about ICT use with students who have visual impairments
