Scoilnet Maps

The Scoilnet Maps project commenced in 2007 with the aim of providing Geography teachers and students in second-level schools with online access via the Schools Broadband Network to detailed Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) maps and aerial photographs for use in their teaching and learning. Given the direct relevance of OSi mapping to the revised Leaving Certificate Geography curriculum, Scoilnet Maps has been warmly welcomed by the teaching community. Moreover, provison has been made for teachers to access the OSi content from broadband connections other than school (via secure log-in).

Teachers requiring a personal log-in should complete our online Registration Form.

If you have mislaid or forgotten your log-in details, visit the Scoilnet Accounts page to reissue your details or call the Broadband Service Desk on 1800 334466.

The content currently available on Scoilnet Maps includes:
-- OSi 1:50 000 Raster
-- OSi 1:50 000 DTM
-- OSi 1:450 000 Raster
-- OSi 1:600 000 Raster
-- OSi 1:10 560 Raster (Vintage)
-- OSi Orthophotos 2000
All of this OSi data has been specifically licensed for educational use within the Scoilnet Maps website (Ordnance Survey Ireland Internet Publication Licence MNE 0001807).

In April 2010 OSNI and OSI agreed to allow schools north and south of the border to share mapping data. All Northern Irish mapping data is now available in Scoilnet Maps.

Scoilnet Maps allows users to:
-- View, print and compare OSi maps and aerial photographs.
-- Add resources, such as photos or videos, to Scoilnet Maps and "georeference" these as appropriate on maps.
-- Search for relevant resources that other Scoilnet Maps users have created.

The Geography Support Service has collaborated closely with NCTE in the rollout of Scoilnet Maps and their 2008 in-service covered the use of the website in the context of the revised LC Geography curriculum. A large number of curriculum-focussed resources have been uploaded to Scoilnet Maps by the GSS team. Type "GSS" into the search box to retrieve and view these.

Scoilnet Maps is based on InfoMapper technology and has been developed by WebBased Ltd, Plymouth, UK.
