Census information (1998 -2002)

Census on ICT in Schools, carried out by the NCTE starting in 1998, in 2000 and the latest census taken in late 2002, is a comprehensive census of the levels and usage of ICT in schools. Summary findings from the 2002 census are display below along with all available census publications and reports.

Summary findings from the 2002 Census are:
There are over 84,000 computers in Irish schools; 60% of them under 4 years old. This is a 65% increase on the number reported in 2000(51,000).

Computer to pupils ratio:
In Primary schools ratios have improved from 37:1 in 1998 to 18:1 in 2000 to 11.8:1 in 2002.  
In Post Primary schools ratios have improved from 16:1 in 1998 to 13:1 in 2000 to 9.4:1 in 2002.  
In Special schools ratios have improved from 9:1 in 1998 to 6.6:1 in 2000 to 4:1 in 2002. 

Networking:
30.5% of Primary schools have a network
69% of Post Primary schools have a network
19% of Special schools have a network
 
Internet Access:
In Primary schools 39% of computers have access to the internet
In Post Primary schools 66% of computers have access to the internet
In Special Schools 33% of computers have access to the internet
 
Mode of Internet Access in schools:
72% of primary schools have PSTN Lines
26.5% of primary schools have ISDN Lines
1.5% of primary schools have some form of broadband (mainly ADSL & Satellite)
 
7% of Post primary schools have PSTN Lines
87% of Post primary schools have ISDN Lines
6% of Post Primary schools schools have some form of broadband (mainly ADSL & Satellite)
 
65% of Special schools have PSTN Lines
33% of Special schools have ISDN Lines
2% of Special schools have some form of broadband (mainly ADSL & Satellite)
