NI maps now available in Irish second-level schools

Scoilnet Maps

From 06.04.2010, users of Scoilnet Maps (http://maps.scoilnet.ie/), the online mapping website provided by Scoilnet, can view detailed Northern Irish mapping data in addition to the OSI mapping data that has been available to them since 2008. Ordnance Survey Ireland and their counterparts in Northern Ireland, OSNI, have agreed to share their mapping data within the educational online maps websites, Scoilnet Maps and NI Maps. Students and teachers in both jurisdictions will have access to the maps and aerial photos from both OSI and OSNI.

The Northern Irish data sets added to Scoilnet Maps include:
• OSNI 1:250,000
• OSNI 1:50,000
• OSNI 1:10,000 (1970s)
• OSNI 1:10,000 (2007)
• OSNI Aerial 25cm
• OSNI Historic (6" from 1829-42)
• OSNI Landform (DEM of the Mournes)
• OSNI Activity Maps
• OSNI Towns (street level data for specific towns in NI)

The NCTE welcomes this development and is pleased that students and teachers on both sides of the border will be able to explore and study the most authoritative geographical information available for the whole island of Ireland.
