37th AGTI   ANNUAL  CONFERENCE

'Geographical Science'

The theme of our 37th Annual Conference is 'Geographical Science'. In a world which is increasingly driven by science and technology, it is easy to forget the central role geography plays in this.  Geography is the mother of science.  The scientific method used to today was first formalised by Alexander von Humboldt, the father of modern geography. Geography is central to understanding and using the opportunities and challenges presented by globalisation.  This has a special significance in Ireland - one of the most globalised countries in the world. An understanding Geographic concepts is important in developing and making use of the location-based services economy.

The study of geography itself is composed of human and physical sciences.  Physical geography draws heavily on geology. Geomorphologic concepts are tested in the field as part of the LC Geographical Investigation. Mathematical and scientific principles underpin both the economic and human electives and inform the Atmosphere and Ocean Option.

Most significantly, the importance of Geographical Science lies in synthesising several modes of inquiry into a unified whole that at once offers a deeper understanding of the world in which we must build a sustainable future. That future will be shaped in part by geography, but it is a future that can only be understood with a thorough grounding in geographical science.
