NCTE Creating and using ICT resources for Literacy
Overview
This 20 hour course aims to develop the basic ICT skills many teachers already have and enable them to apply these skills to creating ICT resources for teaching and learning. Useful Internet sites for teaching and learning, digital cameras and creating digital stories using images and sound are among the key topics covered.
The course focuses on:

- Special Educational Needs
NB: All of the technologies covered in the course are suitable for use with the interactive whiteboard.

| Prerequisites | Participants should have some experience of carrying out basic ICT tasks (opening, editing, saving, closing files) and ideally have used an internet browser. Completion of a beginner’s ICT skills course will generally satisfy these prerequisites. |
Course Objectives
Participants will be enabled to:
- gain an understanding of the potential uses of ICT to support literacy development
- use digital media and online resources to create teaching and learning resources for literacy development
- explore how ICT can be used to enhance cross curricular teaching and learning
- apply good classroom practice in relation to internet safety and copyright
- upload digital photos to a computer and carry out basic image editing
- become familiar with technologies including digital projectors, handheld devices and visualisers and explore how they can be used for literacy development
- create an e-Learning action plan for literacy development
Course Content
Module 1:
Introduction to ICT in the primary classroom
This module provides an introduction to curricular uses of ICT in the primary classroom, and participants will learn how to create a resource using word processing software. Participants will also learn how to use presentation software and incorporate images and other digital media into their presentations
Module 2:
Using the Internet to support literacy development
Participants will explore online resources including Scoilnet and Encyclopaedia Britannica which support literacy and numeracy development, and will learn about effective use of the Internet in the classroom as well as Internet Safety
Module 3:
Using Digital Media to support literacy development
This module provides an introduction to using digital cameras and other digital technologies in the primary classroom. Participants will explore how these technologies can be used as an aid to literacy development.
Module 4:
Digital Storytelling
Using Photostory and online resources, in this module participants will create a digital story suitable for use in their own classroom. Participants will explore the use of digital storytelling for literacy development.
Module 5:
Planning, self evaluation and school improvement
Participants will explore strategies of sharing resources in their school and will develop an e-Learning Action Plan focused on literacy development. Participants will learn about other technologies which support literacy development, including handheld devices and Web 2.0 tools.
The course includes links to short videos demonstrating ICT integration in the primary school classroom.
Participants will use computers, digital cameras and widely available software programmes to create resources. These can be saved for later use in the classroom. Participants are also guided through the myriad of Internet sites relevant to teaching and learning, with a particular focus on resources applicable to literacy, numeracy and special educational needs.
