NCTE Using the Interactive Whiteboard to support Literacy

Overview

This 20 hour course is aimed at schools interested in equipping teachers with the skills required to effectively use interactive whiteboards to support literacy development.

The course is designed to be delivered within a school, using the school’s own interactive whiteboards.*

PrerequisitesParticipants should have some experience of carrying out basic ICT tasks (opening, editing, saving, closing files) and ideally have used an Internet browser.

Course Objectives

The course enables teachers to:

  • gain an understanding of the potential uses of the interactive whiteboard to support teaching and learning, with a particular focus on literacy
  • become familiar with the main features of their interactive whiteboard
  • create an interactive whiteboard resource, incorporating multimedia, to support literacy development
  • use digital media as a tool for literacy development
  • explore how ICT can be used to enhance cross curricular teaching and learning
  • become familiar with other technologies including visualisers and how they can be used for literacy development
  • explore online resources suitable for use with the interactive whiteboard

This course has a particular focus on the Reading, Writing and Oral strands of the English Curriculum, however the skills and pedagogies can be applied across all curricular areas.

The course relates to the following areas of the NCCA ICT Framework:

  • Area C – Creating, communicating and collaborating
  • Area F – Foundational knowledge, skills and concepts

Course Content

Module 1:
Introduction to interactive whiteboards in the primary classroom
Participants will explore uses of interactive whiteboards as an aid to literacy development and learn how to use the basic tools of the boards. This module also provides an introduction to digital media as a resource for literacy development.

Module 2:
Creating a literacy resource with your interactive whiteboard
Participants will create a literacy resource using their interactive whiteboard software which  incorporates sound and multimedia.

Module 3:
Using online resources with your interactive whiteboard to support literacy
Participants will explore online resources including Scoilnet and Encyclopaedia Britannica which support literacy and numeracy development, and will learn about effective use of the Internet in the classroom and Internet Safety

Module 4:
Downloading and adapting literacy and numeracy resources
This module provides an introduction to interactive whiteboard resources available online, both for literacy and numeracy development, how to find and adapt them for use in your classroom.

Module 5:
Classroom management and using other technologies with your interactive whiteboard to support literacy
Participants will explore multimedia and other technologies, including visualisers, and their uses in conjunction with the interactive whiteboard. Participants will incorporate additional elements to their created resource for use in their own classroom.

* Please note a minimum of 10 teachers is required to run this course. Schools may cluster to meet this minimum requirement. For more information regarding whole school training, please contact your local Education Centre.
