NCTE Getting Started with your Laptop and Digital Projector
Overview
The course focuses on the development of basic ICT skills for those with little or no experience of ICT, particularly with regard to its use in the classroom. The aim is to enable teachers to begin to use ICT in their classrooms independently and pursue other NCTE courses at the Basic level with confidence. The skills learnt and content covered in this course are also applicable to interactive whiteboards.

Course Objectives
With a particular focus on teaching and learning, participants will be enabled to:
- create and edit a simple document using word processing software
- describe files and folders and set up a basic folder structure for their own laptop or computer
- find online educational resources using an internet browser
- apply good classroom practice in relation to internet safety and copyright
- set up an email account and send and receive emails
- create a simple digital presentation using presentation software
- connect a digital projector to a laptop or teaching computer
- describe some practical applications of ICT to support the development of literacy and numeracy
- describe how ICT can support students with special educational needs
Course Content
The course is divided into three modules:
Module 1 – Creating and editing a document; using files and folders
Module 2 – Internet & Email
Module 3 – Digital presentations
These three modules address the course’s learning objectives above in a very practical, hands-on fashion. The process of, for instance, setting up an email account is covered using a step-by-step approach with each participant at a computer.
