NCTE Non-mainstream Courses
Overview
Non-mainstream NCTE courses are courses which are not part of the standard NCTE course offering. They may be tailored or custom designed to the specific needs of teachers within a school or offered based on demand by a local education centre. Courses in this category are over 2.5 hours in duration. A minimum of 10 teachers is required for all NCTE-funded courses.
The education centre must seek prior approval from NCTE before a non-mainstream course can be scheduled. Such courses can be offered on a whole school basis.
Course Description
Non-mainstream courses can have various durations (over 2.5 hours) and be tailored to address the skill levels of participants. The courses can be school-based or, in some cases, can be held in another local venue such as a local education centre.
While the content of these courses are largely determined by the requirements of the participants, some ideas to consider include:
- A tailored version of the NCTE's Creating ICT Resources course to focus on specific curriculum strands/strand units.
- For post-primary schools, courses on subject-specific use of ICT such as learning how to use ICT in Art, Science etc.
- Applying the tools covered in the NCTE’s Web 2.0 for Learning course in resource teaching/learning support.
- Use of online tools for ICT co-ordinating teachers.
Schools can apply to run a non-mainstream NCTE course on a whole school basis by sending the ICT Whole School Training Request Form to their local education centre.
