Overview of Project

The project is investigating the role of ICT in general, and Digital Video in particular, in the teaching of Physical Education in Ireland. The project will specifically focus on the use of Digital Video as a teaching and learning tool. The project aims to discover the parameters within which Digital Video can be best exploited within Physical Education. Though the specific focus of the project is on Physical Education, it is hoped that a model will be produced which can also be applied to other areas of the curriculum.

Phase 1 will involve an investigation into how Digital Video can be used to record a varied range of modern day Physical Education lessons. A preliminary investigation will be carried out subsequently into its potential role as a teaching and learning aid across a range of Physical Education activities. Specifically this will focus on its role in providing enhanced feedback on performance to pupils and teachers.

Phase 2 will examine the role that Digital Video has to play in providing solutions to certain assessment challenges in Physical Education. Its significance as an assessment aid and its potential contribution to an equitable and reliable method of assessing practical performances in Physical Education will be examined. Its role in improving the quality of pupil performance and in offering assistance to teachers will be further developed by reference to assessment criteria.

Phase 3 will involve the compilation of resource materials based on the work in schools. Investigations will be carried out into the possible production of a multimedia resource pack for teachers of Physical Education.

Other Possible Outcomes
Guidance can be provided to students undertaking the "Movement Analysis" section of the new Leaving Certificate Physical Education Syllabus.
Both the teacher and pupil population involved in the project will have their technological skills enhanced as a result of their participation.
Pupils who may wish to submit electronic portfolios can be trained in the associated technologies.
The possibility for cross-curricular collaboration and benefit for other subjects on the curriculum will be explored.
