What to Publish on your School Web Site

There is an almost unlimited scope as to what you can publish on a school web site. Any type of information and work done by pupils and staff can be suitable for publication. If you are thinking about your web site as a school newsletter, this will help to give you a feel for the type of content possible.

School Web sites should be based on the curriculum, and where possible consist mostly of the student's own work. Rather than creating new or additional work, current projects and assignments can be performed on the computer and incorporated into Web pages. Involve the students in the design and creation of the site and try and ensure a good spread of classes. The more technical aspects, such as linking and uploading, can be dealt with by the teacher.

Tip: There is an evolution in the development of I.C.T. in schools, which dictates schools knowledge and integration of I.C.T. and is an ongoing and cumulative experience. Schools would be wise to reflect this principle by starting off with perhaps just one web page and, through this single page, to become familiar with the technicalities and practicalities involved.

Warning: The biggest error in first-time publishing is in creating too large a web site. This leads to difficulties in:

  • Completing the web site
  • Maintaining and updating the web site
